Coordinated Pregnancy Care for Heart Patients

Women with underlying heart conditions face increased risk of complicated pregnancies. The Heart Disease in Pregnancy Program through Saint Luke's Hospital Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists has the knowledge and experience these women need to have a safer pregnancy.

How the program works

We can work with you at any point in your pregnancy, whether you’re still thinking of starting a family, recently received a positive test result, or are a few months along. You’ll get the expert care you and your baby need from our specialists:

  • A maternal-fetal medicine physician, an obstetrician who specializes in high-risk pregnancy
  • A board-certified, specialty trained cardiologist to manage all underlying heart conditions
  • A board-certified, specialty trained anesthesiologist to tailor pain management plan to each patient’s unique health conditions
  • Constant monitoring by both cardiovascular and maternity nursing teams during your labor and delivery.

Immediate and consistent communication lets us better coordinate patient care from pre-conception through pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum.

Why it matters

Communication is key with high-risk pregnancies, and more so when heart conditions are in the picture.

  • Mothers are at risk of worsening heart failure, arrhythmia, or emergent cardiac procedures.
  • Cardiac pregnancies have increased risks for preeclampsia, maternal hypertension, gestational diabetes, and preterm delivery.
  • Babies are at increased risk for low birth weight and high NICU admission rates.

By closely monitoring these pregnancies, our expert team can manage complications right away. Each patient receives a personalized delivery care plan that ensures immediate access to all necessary care.

  • Tilly Lotspeich is clearly a woman in charge. You’d have to be, to be a female owner of car dealerships, and to make a success of them in the current economic climate. Lotspeich took over the family-run GM dealership in Warrensburg, Mo., five years ago after her husband died of a heart attack.
