Cancer Care

Saint Luke’s Center for Precision Oncology

Our precision oncology experts treat your tumor’s mutation, not just your cancer’s location. It’s the only program within 450 miles that offers this level of expertise in clinical oncology, tumor genomics, and computational biology. We will:

  • Identify the exact genomic alteration causing a tumor
  • Find the best possible treatment—even if it’s never been used on that kind of cancer before
  • Work with insurance and pharmaceutical companies to ensure patients with advanced cancer get the best possible treatment

Meet the Team

Ashiq Masood, MD, is co-director of Saint Luke’s Center for Precision Oncology at Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute. Dr. Masood is one of only a handful of practicing oncologists in the country trained in the field of bioinformatics and cancer genomics. This unique background means he has the expertise to analyze and interpret genomic testing results to determine a genetic abnormality and match a treatment to that abnormality. Dr. Masood is actively involved in cancer genomics research and is training the next generation of clinical fellows and medical residents as an assistant professor at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine.

Janakiraman Subramanian, MD, MPH, is co-director of Saint Luke’s Center for Precision Oncology and director of thoracic oncology at Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute. Dr. Subramanian was involved in one of the first whole genome sequencing projects in lung cancer and served as the project manager for the multi-center Tissue Source Site network, which was instrumental in providing tumor and normal tissue samples for The Cancer Genome Atlas Project. His training and background allow him to bring together the disciplines of medical oncology and cancer genomics to benefit his patients.

Timothy Pluard, MD, is medical director at Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute. Under his leadership, Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City launched its innovative Koontz Center for Advanced Breast Cancer, one of the few centers nationally, and the only one in the Midwest, dedicated exclusively to the care of  patients with metastatic breast cancer. Genomic sequencing is routinely incorporated in the management of patients at the Koontz Center.
