Our treatment options include:

John M. Price, M.D., Medical Director of Saint Luke's Center for Surgical Weight Loss 

John M. Price, M.D., has performed more than 1,200 weight-loss procedures since 1993. He's performed minimally invasive, or laparoscopic, procedures since 2001. He consults for H.L. Gore and also is a consulting surgeon with Ethicon Endo-Surgery®, teaching his gastric bypass technique to other surgeons in the field.

Dr. Price performs gastric banding, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. He also performs skin-reduction procedures, such as tummy tucks, after weight loss surgery. And he revises failed surgical weight loss procedures.

Dr. Price is a board certified general surgeon and fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a full member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Dr. Price is medical director of Saint Luke's Center for Surgical Weight Loss. His program has been designated an ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®.

Geoffrey C. Slayden, M.D., F.A.C.S.Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon
Geoffrey C. Slayden, M.D., F.A.C.S., completed his medical school and general surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, in Tulsa, Okla. He then completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. He performs laparoscopic bariatric surgery including gastric bypasssleeve gastrectomy, and laparoscopic gastric band placement. He also performs other minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopic colon resections, anti-reflux surgery, hernia repair, and others.

Dr. Slayden is a board-certified general surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). His practice is located at Saint Luke’s South Hospital in Overland Park, Kan.

G. Brent Sorensen, M.D.Surgeon at Saint Luke's Center for Surgical Weight Loss
G. Brent Sorensen, M.D., became interested in bariatrics during his surgical residency. He trained with pioneers in the field of laparoscopic bariatrics Stephen Scott, M.D., and Roger De La Torre, M.D. He then did a fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and bariatrics.

Dr. Sorensen performs gastric bandinggastric bypass, and sleeve gastrectomy. He also performs other minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures. Since joining Saint Luke's, he has introduced techniques to improve bariatric patient care and outcomes.

Dr. Sorensen is a board-certified general surgeon and a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He also serves as an associate professor of surgery for the University of Missouri–Kansas City.

Julie Porter, R.N., M.S.N., N.P.-C.
Julie Porter, R.N., M.S.N., N.P.-C., offers another aspect to our surgical services. She assesses and evaluates patients in both the hospital and the clinic setting. Julie attended the University of Missouri-Columbia to earn her B.S.N. in 1988. She went on to obtain her Master’s in the Science of Nursing at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2005.

Julie was a nurse in the Neuro/Surgical Intensive Care Unit for two years immediately after she graduated from MU. She then went to Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, and worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for two years. Eventually, she returned to Saint Luke’s where she continued working in the Neuro/Surgical Intensive Care for the next 14 years. Once she achieved her master’s degree with a focus on family practice, she created her current role with the surgeons at Saint Luke’s Hospital.

Julie works with most of the general surgeons in addition to the bariatric surgeons. She assists with the coordination of care during the post-surgical recovery period in the hospital. She provides education regarding the surgery and any pertinent information needed for discharge from the hospital and recovery. Julie also runs a post-operative clinic.

Licensed in both Kansas and Missouri, Julie is a member of the American Academy of  Nurse Practitioners, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and  Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society of nursing. She is an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Instructor. Married for 21 years, Julie has two daughters. She has a passion for volunteering with  her church and Convoy of Hope. She is a devoted Missouri Tiger fan and is partial to college sports. Vacationing in the mountains with plenty of hiking and wildlife watching is her idea of fun.

Appointments: Are made by schedulers at each location's main number, 816-932-7900.

Arrival time: New patients are required to bring their driver's license or picture I.D., current insurance card, and co-payment. New patients are requested to arrive approximately 15-20 minutes early for the first appointment unless medical history information has been completed prior to the appointment. For subsequent appointments, please arrive at least 10 minutes early so we can verify all your important information. Please bring your current insurance card to each appointment.

Cancellations: If you need to cancel an appointment, we ask that you call 24 hours in advance. Failure to cancel appointments in a timely manner could result in termination from your physician.

Patient registration must be completed for all new patients.

Co-pays and outstanding balances are to be paid at the time of service. Please call 816-932-7900 for bariatric self pay prices.

Financial policy: Payment for medical services is your responsibility, regardless of insurance coverage. We participate with many of the insurance plans in the area. Our business office staff can assist in verifying your physician's participation with your plan. We recommend that you also confirm this with your insurance carrier.

Medical records, letters, and physician reports will be completed at your request with your written authorization. A fee may be charged for this service. Please provide at least 72 hours notice (three business days) if you would like your medical records released. Your health record is considered confidential; information about your health is never released without your written authorization.

Medication refills: Contact your pharmacy for medication refill requests. Your pharmacist will contact our office for approval from your physician. Medications will not be approved by phone on the weekend or after hours. Please allow 24-48 hours for this process with medications that you take on a regular basis. If you need a written prescription to mail in, please notify us. We do not fax mail order prescriptions; we will mail them to you to send on to the pharmacy.
