Hospitalists at Saint Luke's
Why did Saint Luke's Health System develop the hospitalist (hospital-based physician specialists) approach to hospital care?

Physicians who specialize in hospital care are a departure from the way doctors have traditionally functioned. The emergence of hospitalists is based on the idea that inpatient care specialists can be more efficient and more available than traditional primary care physicians, who spend most of their working day away from the hospital. Saint Luke's Health System's hospitalist program ensures you receive high-quality care from a qualified, accessible, and caring physician.
Chosen by your Physician
  • Your physician chose the Hospitalist team to ensure you receive timely, appropriate care from a caring physician who is always available. This also ensures that your primary care physician is able to spend more time with you and his/her other patients in the outpatient office.
The Hospitalist Advantage
  • The hospitalist team works in the hospital, ensuring you receive the care you need when you need it.
  • The hospitalist team is made up of professional, highly trained physician specialists who are experienced in inpatient care.
  • Because the hospitalist team is on site, you and your family will be informed of your progress on a regular basis.
  • The hospitalist and your primary care physician, along with any specialists, work as a team to ensure you get the care you need. Hospitalists keep your doctor informed about your stay and the treatment plan.

What does a Hospitalist Do?
  • Hospitalist practice medicine full time at the hospital and are experts in inpatient care. When you arrive at the hospital and admitted to the Hospitalist team, we will attend to your care, evaluate your condition, direct your admission, and visit you every day to monitor progress and answer questions.
  • The Hospitalist works in partnership with other care specialists. During your stay, the Hospitalist and all specialists providing to your care will discuss your condition, treatment, and progress on a regular basis. The Hospitalist will offer recommendations and advice and will make every effort to share all information with your PCP.
  • Because the Hospitalist is at the hospital, you and your family will have on-site access in the event of a medical crisis or when you need information.
  • The hospitalist will direct and coordinate your diagnostic testing. If your condition requires specialty services or care, the hospitalist will arrange those services.
  • When it's time to leave the hospital, the hospitalist will arrange your discharge and provide detailed information regarding any follow-up services or medications that you might need during recuperation. All outcomes will be forwarded to your primary care physician.
  • Since hospitalists do not have outpatient practices, you will not have an appointment to see the hospitalist after discharge. Your regular physician will be responsible for outpatient care after discharge, including authorizing refills of prescriptions.
