Common Characteristics of a Batterer or Potential Batterer
  • Batterers come from all races, social statuses, income levels, religions, cultures, professions, heterosexual and homosexual relationships
  • Push for quick involvement
  • Extreme jealousy
  • Controlling behavior
  • "too good to be true"
  • Verbally abusive in addition to physical abuse
  • Tries to isolate the victim
  • Uses intimidation
  • Poor impulse control
  • Breaks or strikes things in anger
  • Substance abuse common
  • Minimizes abuse - denies the severity or seems not to remember
  • History of violence
  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personalities
  • Rape or use of force in sex
  • Threatens to take the kids away, file for custody
  • Will do whatever it takes to drive the victim away then does whatever it takes to get the victim back
