Prevalence Self Assessment - Answers

Question #4 : Women are more likely to develop high blood pressure after menopause.

True: : High blood pressure is known as the ‘silent killer'. As women progress through menopause the lining of the coronary arteries tend to stiffen and does not react as effectively leading to elevations in both systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) readings.

Thirty-five percent of people are not aware they have high blood pressure while 16%, who are aware , are not on blood pressure lowering medication. Overall, 38% of people on blood pressure medication do not have adequately controlled blood pressure. These statistics reinforce the value of monitoring and recording your blood pressure at home to share with your health care provider.
